Lions Sign S C.C. Brown to a one-year deal--The need is certainly there, but the fit is OJ-esque at best. The Lions are still searching for a safety opposite Louis Delmas and must hope that Daniel Bullocks can be that guy, without trusting that he will be. Smart move.
Brown is best (and actually very good) when asked to play in the box and stop the run. The Giants asked him to cover tight ends and slot recievers, and that is a no-no.
Lions Sign WR Marko Mitchell--If you look back through the Lions archives, one can find plenty of receivers like Mitchell who was a huge story for the Redskins in preseason but couldn't find the field. Still, he has great triangle numbers and had good college production. The similarities to another option receiver, Demaryius Thomas, are apt.
I expect Mitchell to spend much of his time in camp battling to be a fifth receiver but could very well end up on the practice squad.
Lions Sign TE John Madsen/Waive WR Kole Heckendorf--The former Packer wideout has already been claimed by Seattle but had been replaced on Detroit's roster by Mitchell and Georgia WR Mike Moore. Madsen is a camp body with great recieving skills (was a WR at Utah) but needs to improve his blocking.
Getting Madsen is an underrated move in my mind. Not that he will contribute greatly to the 2010 wins and losses, but that he will be able to back up Scheffler's TE position in camp and has the vertical speed/catching ability to mimic what he does with the second team.
