Detroit Lions Favored In Intriguing Matchup Against Upstart Colts

By SBRForum.com

The Detroit Lions season of frustration will moves on to Week 13 with a home tilt against rookie sensation Andrew Luck and the potentially playoff-bound Indianapolis Colts Sunday. The Lions (4-7), who have seen their playoff hopes all but erased with losses the last three weeks, are nonetheless favored to knock off the upstart Colts (7-4) in Motor City.

High-volume betting on the favored Lions has spurred the NFL odds for this game to increase a half-point to -minus 5. The over/under is installed at 51 points at most locales.

The Lions are liked by the books despite having lost three straight games, largely because any of those could have been decided either way.  Their Thanksgiving day 34-31 overtime heartbreaker to the Houston Texans likely drove the final nail in the coffin of the Lions' playoff aspirations.

Despite the string of defeats, the Lions continue to be viewed as a dangerous team. The Lions aerial attack, led by quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Calvin Johnson, lead the NFL with 312.5 passing yards a game. It faces a Colts defense that ranks near the bottom of the league both against the pass and in points allowed.

Johnson will be particularly looking to have a big game against the Colts. He currently leads the NFL with 1,257 receiving yards and is targeting Jerry Rice's single-season record of 1,848 yards with five games to go.

The Lions also received some encouraging news on the personnel front. Offensive tackle Jeff Backus and running back Mikel Leshoure both returned to practice Wednesday and may be able to go against the Colts.

This is one of the more intriguing matchups on the Week 13 betting menu. The Lions have seen their season turned to ashes in recent weeks despite playing competitive football, while the young Colts will be facing largely uncharted waters with a playoff berth in sight. With that said, Detroit could be primed to take out some frustration following three consecutive disappointing losses. It could be wise to follow the money and lay the five points in this one.
